A Brief Guide to Poker Variations
Poker variations are endless, which lends to the fact that poker has three major categories and more than a hundred sub-categories or game variants. The three umbrella categories of poker are draw poker, stud poker, and community poker. Despite the large number of poker variations, however, one common rule: the rule of poker hand rank. Another element shared are the different poker bets fold, check, raise, and call.
Poker variations exist in the areas of betting structure and rounds of betting, number of players, distribution of cards and composition of hands, and use of wild cards.
How betting is done, for instance, is done in a number of ways. In draw and stud poker, players begin the game by anteing up. Community games, on the other hand, use compulsory bets known as big blind and small blind.
How betting proceeds are not the same for every poker game. In draw poker games, for instance, there is only one round of betting, while in community card games, there are generally four rounds of betting beginning with pre-flop and followed by Flop, Turn, and River.
Hands in draw poker are dealt at one time, while in stud poker, the cards are dealt piecemeal. In community games, on the other hand, cards are dealt as hole cards and as community cards.
In draw poker games, a player has to option to substitute card hands with deck hands, while in community poker games, hands are composed of a defined number of hole cards and a defined number of poker hands.
A game may limit the number of players at a table. Some may hold up to nine players, some up to six only. In rare cases, as it is in pai gow poker and Caribbean stud poker, players do not pit against each other but against the dealer.
Use of wild cards vary also among the many game variants. In some games, deuces are used as wild cards; in some games, queen; and in some games, none.
Poker variations are created in a number of ways. Poker variations are created, for instance, by adding or removing a round of betting, limiting the number of cards to be substituted to three, or by having cards to be discarded from a hand. This has resulted to a large number of game variants of draw poker, stud poker, and community poker. Hurricane, for instance, is a draw poker game. It differs from another draw poker game, five-card draw, by allowing only two cards to be substituted while five-cards allows up to four provided that the only card they won't draw is an Ace.
If there's an adjective to describe poker, it would be the word "flexible." Poker variations are innumerable. Poker variations are created by restructuring certain poker rules. One rules true for all, however--- the rule of poker hand rank.
